Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of answers to the most frequently asked questions

What is the Green Guarantee?

The Green Guarantee allows us (Telford & Wrekin Council) to safeguard council-owned land that people value whilst allowing the town to continue to develop and grow in a way that protects the rich natural landscape and open spaces.

In 2016 we protected 104 sites under the Green Guarantee. Now, in 2018 we’re nearly doubling this number to 200. An additional 96 sites have been identified and we’re asking the public to vote for their favourites.

How can I register to vote?

You’ll need access to the website
You can use a computer at one of Telford’s Libraries if you don’t have your own.

Click on the ‘register’ tab at the top of the home page, then on the registration page you’ll be asked to enter: Your name; Email address; Age group and a password.

Let us know if you’d like to hear from us about events, news and volunteering opportunities across the borough and if you’d like to be entered into the free prize draw. You’ll then be sent an email with a link. Click the link to confirm your email address and start voting.

How do I vote?

Visit the registration page, fill in your details and after you’ve verified your email, find your favourite site and vote. Click the ‘Vote for this site’ button and be sure to share your vote. You can even share pictures and chat about the site on the dedicate page of the website. Every registered email account will be given

When does voting close?

You have six weeks to vote and voting closes at midnight on Sunday 15 April 2018.

Do I have to be a resident to vote?

No, as long as you register, you can vote. This is ideal as friends and family who live outside the borough but visit and use the green spaces can vote too.

How do I find local sites?

There are three ways to search for sites near to you. Enter your post code on the home page. This will take you to a list of sites near to you. Or, click on our interactive map to search the site by zones in the borough.

We’ve also split the sites into four groups; Woodland, Amenity, Urban Green Space and Allotments. So if you have a particular interest in certain types of green space you can view each group separately.

How will the sites be protected?

Protection for the council-owned sites will be through the formal cabinet decision making process. Once adopted you’ll be able to view the cabinet report here.
By formally recognising these sites we’ll be able to encourage the formation of ‘Friends of’ groups creating access to external funding opportunities, helping to manage and enhance our community’s green spaces.

How do I leave comments?

We’d really like to hear about why you value the sites. What you use them for and why they are important to you so feel free to share your experiences, memories and stories.

Once registered, find a site you wish to comment on, scroll down to the comments section and type into the box.

You won’t see your comment immediately as we have to check them carefully for appropriate language. You can read our moderation policy

We’d also like to know if you agree with the boundary we’ve drawn or what changes you could suggest? We’d also be keen to hear if you know the site by any other name. All this information we be used to ensure site information is accurate before finally approved at cabinet.

How do I share photographs?

You’ll need to be registered, scroll down to the comments section and select the upload photograph icon. We need to check these before they go live so won't appear immediately.

How do I share site info on social media?

Throughout the website you’ll see social media icons. Just click on an icon and follow the instructions to share details of sites and your votes with friends and family on Twitter and Facebook.

What’s the free prize draw and how do I enter?

When you register, your email account will be entered into a sponsored prize draw as a little ‘thank you’ from us. Prizes include a garden wildlife hamper including hedgehog food, bird feeders, seed and bird boxes along with Green Guarantee goodies or wildflower seeds. See the T&Cs. You can opt out of this draw if you wish by emailing us at

What other protection exists for land in Telford & Wrekin?

Green Guarantee areas sit within a wider framework of protected sites. Across the borough we have eight Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), 13 Local Nature Reserves, 47 Local Wildlife Sites and a number of Fields in Trust and Village Greens. These sites form a ‘green network’ across our borough. To learn more about these sites and Telford & Wrekin’s green network click here.

Why are sites with other designations not included in the Green Guarantee?

The Green Guarantee is targeted at protecting council-owned sites which do not qualify for protection by any other means for example nature reserves, sites of special scientific interest etc as they are already protected.

How were the sites selected?

Each of the 96 sites have been assessed against nine different selection criterias. If you would like more detailed information email:
